Direct cremation funeral plans allow you to choose and pay for an unattended cremation in advance. The plan sets out the services the provider will arrange when you die, helping to reduce the practical and financial decisions left to your family.
Unlike a life insurance policy, a prepaid direct cremation plan does not simply provide a cash payment. It is a contract for specified funeral services, such as collection, care of the deceased, a coffin, transport and cremation.
You can normally pay for a plan in full or by instalments. However, when the plan becomes active, and what happens if you die before completing the payments, will depend on the provider’s terms.
Prepaid direct cremation plans in the UK have been regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority since 29 July 2022. Before purchasing one, check that the provider is authorised, understand exactly what is included and compare the total cost rather than the advertised monthly payment alone.
A direct cremation is an unattended cremation without a funeral service or mourners at the crematorium. The person who has died is collected, cared for and transported to the crematorium. The ashes are then handled according to the plan. There is also an important distinction between physical cremation and the funeral format (see our comparison between cremation and direct cremation).
A direct cremation plan UK customers purchase in advance is a contract for those arrangements to be provided in the future. The price usually reflects the simple nature of the service. There is no attended cremation ceremony, hearse-led procession, limousine or service for the family at the crematorium.
The cost of direct cremation should be compared according to the complete service rather than the headline price. Crystal’s direct cremation plan currently costs £1,425. It includes collection from England, Scotland and Wales, care of the deceased, a coffin, cremation fees, transport on the day of cremation and hand delivery of the ashes.
It does not include viewing, an attended service, a procession, hearse or flowers. If these elements are important, an attended traditional funeral plan or celebration of life plan may be more appropriate.
Before purchasing any plan, read the terms and conditions and ask the provider to explain anything unclear. A statement that a plan is “all-inclusive” should be supported by a clear list of inclusions and exclusions.
When cover begins depends on how the plan is paid for and the provider’s terms.
For example, with Crystal:
This distinction is important to note. Paying an initial deposit or several instalments does not necessarily mean that every service is immediately guaranteed.
Before choosing instalments, ask:
Our instalment option may not be suitable or available if someone has been diagnosed with an illness or condition that means they are likely to die within the next 12 months. Talk directly with us to find out whether this could affect you.
Our current cancellation terms provide a full return of payments when the plan is cancelled within the first 30 days. After that period, a £249 cancellation charge applies. If monthly payments stop and the plan is cancelled, payments are refunded minus the cancellation charge.
The terms of another provider will be different. So always base your decision on the contract you are being offered, rather than assuming all prepaid cremation plans work the same way. Your provider should be upfront, transparent, and willing to answer all your questions to make their terms clear to you.
Can I pay for my funeral in advance? Yes. A prepaid funeral plan is one of several ways to do so. Other possibilities include savings, life insurance and over-50s insurance, but these products work differently.
| Option | What It Provides |
| Prepaid funeral plan | Specified funeral services arranged under a contract |
| Savings | Money that can be used towards any funeral arrangements |
| Life insurance | A cash payout if the policy conditions are met |
| Over-50s plan | A cash sum following death, subject to the policy terms |
The phrase “cremation insurance” is sometimes used informally when people are looking for a way to cover funeral costs. However, a funeral plan and an insurance policy are not interchangeable.
With cremation insurance or life insurance, the payout may contribute towards the funeral, but it does not necessarily guarantee that particular services will be provided. The payout could also be higher or lower than the eventual funeral cost. With a prepaid direct cremation plan, the contract identifies the services the provider has agreed to arrange.
The FCA began regulating the prepaid funeral-plan market on 29 July 2022.
A provider selling or administering prepaid funeral plans must be authorised by the FCA and have permission for the relevant activities. Consumers can check a provider using the FCA Financial Services Register.
FCA rules include standards relating to:
The FCA also banned cold calling relating to funeral plans and commission payments to intermediaries.
MoneyHelper’s guidance on prepaid funeral-plan regulation explains that customers of authorised providers have the right to complain to the Financial Ombudsman Service and may have access to the Financial Services Compensation Scheme.
Crystal Funeral Planning (a trading style of Crystal Cremations Ltd) is authorised and regulated by the FCA under firm reference number 961835 for entering into and carrying out funeral-plan contracts.
The Financial Services Compensation Scheme may protect eligible customers if an FCA-authorised funeral-plan provider fails.
The FSCS funeral-plan guidance states that protection can apply when an authorised provider goes out of business on or after 29 July 2022. This may include plans purchased before that date.
Where possible, the FSCS may seek to arrange a replacement plan with another regulated provider. The replacement should have the same terms as the original plan or terms that are as similar as possible.
If a replacement cannot be arranged or the customer does not want one, compensation may be available. The FSCS states that eligible funeral-plan claims are protected up to £85,000 per person, per firm. Compensation is calculated with reference to the cost of purchasing the same plan on the current market.
Protection may also apply to certain claims regarding advice or the arrangement of a plan, provided the relevant activity took place on or after 29 July 2022.
FSCS protection is subject to eligibility and the circumstances of the claim. It should not be described as an unconditional guarantee covering every possible loss.
When comparing direct cremation plans, begin with the funeral you actually want. A very low price is not good value if the plan excludes services your family will later need. Equally, there is little benefit in paying for ceremonial elements that you do not want.
Our guide to arranging a direct cremation step by step explains how the individual arrangements fit together.
Compare the following points:
Also check who will provide the funeral. The company selling or administering the plan may work with nominated funeral directors, mortuaries and crematoria rather than personally delivering every stage.
Our co-founder, Marting, explains Crystal’s clear funeral pricing and no hidden costs here.
The cheapest prepaid direct cremation is the plan with the lowest complete cost for the services you need, not necessarily the one with the smallest headline price or monthly payment.
A low advertised price may exclude:
The comparison should also consider whether the provider is authorised, when cover starts and what happens if payments stop. Comparing the cheapest direct cremation services like for like is a good place to start if you’re looking for a provider.
Paying in full may provide immediate cover, whereas an instalment plan may delay complete cover until the balance is paid. The cheapest payment method on paper may not, therefore, provide the protection you expect during the payment period.
Direct cremation funeral plans allow you to arrange and pay for an unattended cremation in advance. They can answer the question “Can I pay for my funeral in advance?” with a contract for defined services rather than an unrestricted cash payment.
Before buying, check what is covered, what is excluded and exactly when the plan becomes active. Pay particular attention to collection, crematorium fees, coffin costs, ashes return, cancellation charges and what happens if you die before completing instalments.
Confirm that the provider is authorised on the FCA Register and understand the circumstances in which Financial Ombudsman or FSCS protection may apply.
A good plan should make the future arrangements clearer for both you and your family. Take a look at Crystal’s funeral plans and read more about our direct cremation service to see exactly what you can expect.
