In this Ask the Expert article, Martin, co-founder of Crystal Funeral Planning, explains what “no hidden costs” means in practice.
Martin and the Crystal team have more than 30 years’ experience in estate and funeral planning. Here, he explains why transparent pricing matters, what Crystal includes as standard, and why families should always know exactly what they are paying for.
Funeral planning has received some bad press over recent years, and in some cases quite rightly so.
Before funeral plan regulation, some customers were left out of pocket by unregulated providers. That has understandably made people cautious. Families want to know their money is protected, their plan is clear, and their loved ones will not be left with unexpected costs later.
Public confidence is improving, and we are seeing more people interacting with us and choosing to put plans in place. But the concern is still understandable.
When someone buys a direct cremation plan, they should know what is included, what is not included, and what their family may need to do when the time comes.
Our plans are designed to be all-inclusive.
That means the main services needed for a direct cremation are included in the plan price. This includes collection of the deceased, care, and preparation before the cremation, the cremation itself, and the delivery of ashes afterwards. Everything other than the removal of medical devices, such as a pacemaker, and an extra-large coffin if required at the time of death.
For families comparing direct cremation costs, it is important to look beyond the headline price. A cheaper-looking option may not include the same services, or may involve extra charges later.
At Crystal, we want the plan to be clear from the start. Families should not have to search through small print to understand what they are buying.
Because we are FCA regulated, we are not allowed to mislead our customers (not that we ever would).
So when we say a plan is all-inclusive, that is exactly what we mean. From collection of the deceased to care before cremation and the later delivery of ashes, the key services are included.
A direct cremation is already a simpler funeral option because there is no attended service at the crematorium. But simple should not mean unclear.
Families should know what will happen, what is included, and whether there is anything else they may need to pay for.
Our aim is straightforward: no hidden fees, no confusing small print, and no unpleasant surprises for the family at the time of need.
There are only a small number of exceptions.
The main examples are the removal of a medical device, such as a pacemaker, or an extra-large coffin if one is required at the time of death.
We believe these exceptions should be stated clearly. Nobody should be led to believe something is included if it is not.
This is why transparency matters so much. When families understand the possible exceptions in advance, they can make decisions with confidence instead of worrying about unexpected charges later.
For most customers, there is not a lot to complicate and not many questions they feel they need to ask.
We explain what the plan includes, what the exceptions are, and how the price compares with other providers. Because we offer a very low-cost plan, some people understandably ask how we can provide the same level of service for less.
The answer is simple: we keep our overheads low, our profit margins tight, and we pass those savings on to our customers.
That does not mean cutting corners. Families still receive a professional, dignified service. They simply are not paying for unnecessary extras or inflated costs.
For anyone comparing the cheapest direct cremation plan in the UK, the key is to compare like for like. Look at what is actually included, not just the number on the page.
Transparency gives families confidence, reassurance and trust.
Funeral planning is not like buying an everyday product. People are making decisions about their own future, or about someone they love. They need to feel certain that the provider is being honest with them.
Because our plans are priced so competitively, some customers naturally ask whether the service will still be dignified. We understand that concern.
Our answer is that a lower price does not mean a lower standard of care. The cremation process still needs to be handled properly, the deceased still needs to be cared for respectfully, and the family still needs to be supported.
That is why clear pricing and clear communication are so important.
Families should always check what is included before choosing a provider.
They should ask whether the collection, care of the deceased, a coffin, and the return of ashes are included, and whether there are any extra charges at the time of need.
They should also check whether the provider is regulated, whether the team can answer questions clearly, and whether they feel pressured during the conversation. A good provider should be able to explain the plan in plain English. Families should not feel confused, rushed or uncertain.
For us, “no hidden costs” means being clear about the price, the inclusions and the possible exceptions from the beginning.
Families deserve to know exactly what they are buying, and to feel confident that their wishes will be handled with care, dignity and transparency.
