In this Ask the Expert article, Martin, co-founder of Crystal Funeral Planning, explains what families should look for when choosing a direct cremation provider.

Martin and the Crystal team have more than 30 years’ experience in estate and funeral planning. Here, he shares what he believes makes a provider trustworthy, from clear pricing and regulation to communication, aftercare, and honest advice.

What should families look for in a provider?

The first thing to check is whether the provider is FCA-regulated.

That’s essential because regulation helps protect customers and gives families reassurance that the provider must meet certain standards, and that their money is protected in the unlikely event the provider goes out of business. A funeral plan is an important financial and personal decision, so people should feel confident that they are buying from a regulated business.

Families should also do their research. Compare providers, read the small print, ask questions, and check exactly what is and is not included. It is worth looking beyond the headline price and making sure the plan actually suits your budget and needs.

At Crystal, we try to keep this simple. Our funeral plans are all-inclusive, which means the customer will not have to pay anything extra at the time of need, except for clearly agreed exceptions.

What are good signs during the first phone call?

A good sign is that the provider takes time to listen.

When customers call us, many have already done a lot of research. They know they want a direct cremation plan, they have compared options, and they understand the advantages of putting a plan in place.

But even when someone is well informed, the provider should still take care to explain everything clearly. The call should feel calm, open, and pressure-free.

A trustworthy provider should help you feel more confident by the end of the conversation, not more confused.

What are warning signs?

A warning sign is when a provider does not take the time to understand your needs.

If someone enquires about a plan but does not fully understand what they are buying, the provider should slow down and explain things properly. At Crystal, we ask questions and make sure the customer understands their options before proceeding.

In some cases, if we do not think a funeral plan meets someone’s needs, we will say so. We may suggest involving family members or, in some situations, decline to proceed.

That is important because selling a funeral plan should not be about pushing a product. It should be about making sure the customer is making the right decision for their circumstances.

Why does clear pricing matter?

Clear pricing is extremely important. A funeral plan is something people buy for peace of mind. They want to know what is included, what is not included, and whether their family could face extra costs later.

At Crystal, we focus on open and transparent pricing. We offer three simple plans, all of which are designed to be fully inclusive, with nothing further to pay at the time of need except for clearly stated exceptions, such as an extra-large coffin or the removal of a medical device if required.

This is really important but there are, unfortunately, providers out there who mislead customers by advertising an ‘at need’ price which is often lower than the cost of a funeral plan. ‘At Need’ is when someone has recently passed and needs a funeral. Families comparing providers should look carefully at the direct cremation cost, what the plan includes, and whether the advertised price is for a funeral plan or an “at-need” funeral after someone has already died.

Why does communication matter as much as cost?

Communication is at the heart of what we do. As a psychotherapist, I know that good communication is not just about being able to speak to people. It is about being able to listen properly.

Active listening means hearing what someone says, understanding what matters to them, and showing that understanding in how you respond. This is especially important in funeral planning, because people are often talking about sensitive, emotional, and personal decisions.

A provider may offer a low-cost direct cremation, but price alone is not enough. Families also need reassurance and clear answers.

What questions should every provider be able to answer?

Every provider should be able to answer questions about the funeral plan they are offering.

That includes what is included, what is excluded, how collection works, what happens after death, how the ashes are returned, what paperwork is involved, and what support is available for the family.

If a provider cannot answer these questions clearly, I would advise customers to look elsewhere.

At Crystal, we invest time and money in supporting our team so they understand our plans properly and sell them compliantly. Product knowledge matters because customers deserve accurate information and reassurance before they make a decision.

Families may also want to understand practical details such as how to arrange a direct cremation, how the cremation process works, and what happens when the ashes are returned.

What does good aftercare look like?

Good aftercare is just as important as the sale of the plan. Every Crystal customer receives a follow-up call from our team to make sure they have received their funeral plan pack. This pack contains the information relating to their plan, including a funeral plan summary document and details for any nominated representatives.

A nominated representative is someone the customer wants to know that a funeral plan is in place. When the time comes, that person can contact us 24/7, and we will take care of the next steps.

Think of a nominated representative as a more formal version of next of kin. It helps make sure the right people know what to do and who to call. That can make a difficult time much easier for the family.

Final thoughts

A trustworthy direct cremation provider should be regulated, transparent, knowledgeable and willing to listen.

Families should feel able to ask questions, compare options, and choose a plan with confidence, without pressure or confusion.
