In this Ask the Expert article, Martin, co-founder of Crystal Funeral Planning, explains how families are kept informed during the direct cremation process.

Martin and the Crystal team have more than 30 years’ experience in estate and funeral planning. Here, he talks about communication, expectations, delays, and why reassurance matters so much when there is no attended funeral service.

When do families receive updates?

After a plan holder dies, the family will speak to our team and be told what happens next.

At this stage, it is very important that expectations are clear. A direct cremation does not include a funeral service at the crematorium, so the communication is different from what families might expect with a traditional funeral.

There is no order of service to arrange, no arrival time for mourners, and no ceremony to plan. That means there is often less to update the family on after the initial arrangements have been made.

However, the family will be told what they need to know, what to expect over the coming weeks, and who to contact if they have questions.

What stages do you update families about?

The main stages are the first call, the arrangements after death, any delays that might affect the process, and the return of ashes after the cremation.

In some rare cases, we may be able to confirm the date of the cremation, but this is not guaranteed. This is because direct cremation is unattended, and the cremation is arranged without a service for mourners.

Families who want to understand the wider cremation process can ask us questions at any point. We know that even when there are fewer decisions to make, people still want reassurance that everything is being handled properly.

The next major update after the cremation will usually relate to the delivery of the ashes.

Who is the family’s point of contact?

We have a dedicated team available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

All the contact information is included in the funeral plan pack that the customer receives after purchasing one of our plans. This means the customer, and any nominated representatives they choose to share the information with, know who to contact when the time comes.

Having a clear point of contact matters. Families should not have to search for information or wonder who to call at a difficult time.

A direct cremation plan should make things simpler for the people left behind, not add confusion.

What if paperwork causes a delay?

If there is a delay because of paperwork, the family will be informed and updated. Sometimes there may be a post-mortem before the death certificate can be issued. In other cases, there may be a coroner’s inquest. These situations can delay the cremation, and they are outside the family’s control.

When this happens, we maintain contact with the family so they understand what is going on. Delays can be upsetting, especially when people are waiting for the process to move forward, so communication becomes even more important.

Families often want to know how long cremation takes, but timelines can vary depending on paperwork, availability, and legal requirements.

What if the family has questions after booking?

That is absolutely fine. In fact, we welcome questions at any time.

We understand that purchasing a funeral plan can bring up all sorts of feelings and concerns. Some people feel relieved once the plan is in place. Others may think of more questions later, especially after speaking to family members.

That is why we have a dedicated team ready to answer questions from customers and their wider family.

Funeral planning is not something people do every day. Nobody should feel embarrassed about asking for clarification, whether it is about collection, paperwork, pricing, ashes, or how to arrange a direct cremation when the time comes.

How do you balance professionalism with compassion?

For us, professionalism and compassion go together. Compassion, empathy, and understanding are part of the culture at Crystal. We know that customers need a sympathetic ear when discussing funeral wishes, but they also need confidence that the plan is being sold and managed professionally.

Funeral plans are regulated financial products, so customers should expect clear information, proper processes and a high standard of care.

At the same time, they are talking about something deeply personal. So the way we communicate matters just as much as the information we provide. We aim to speak to every customer with both compassion and professionalism.

Why do updates matter so much when there is no attended service?

With a traditional funeral, the family may feel more involved because they are arranging details for the service. With direct cremation, much of the process happens quietly in the background.

That can be a comfort for some families, because there is less to organise. But it can also leave people wanting reassurance that everything is progressing as it should.

Clear communication helps with that. Even if there is not always a lot to update, families need to know that their loved one is being cared for and that the arrangements are being handled properly.

Once the ashes are returned, the family can decide what to do with ashes after cremation in their own time. That might mean scattering them, keeping them, arranging an interment, or holding a private memorial.

Final thoughts

Good communication is not about overwhelming families with unnecessary information.

It is about setting clear expectations, being available when questions come up, and offering reassurance at every stage of the process.
